The Board of Historical Miniatures Gaming Society has announced the cancelation of Cold Wars 2022. Though the society’s Historicon 2021 went off without a hitch, the Ocean City, MD event, scheduled for April 1—3, faced enough resistance to force cancelation.
According to the HMGS, the event was facing a potential loss of 50% to 60% of its exhibitors due to Cold Wars’ location. Additionally, the event was scheduled for the weekend after Adepticon, which threatened the overall attendance.
“The likely significant loss of “day trippers,” coupled with a reduced weekend attendance, also contributed to the negative financial picture,” HMGS President John Hollier announced.
Hollier also noted that HMGS canceled the 2023 and 2024 agreements with the facility, leaving the future of Cold Wars up in the air. The last Cold Wars was held in 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Cold Wars 2021 became a victim of COVID and was shut down for the safety of attendees.
Hollier closed the announcement on a hopeful note, stating the society hopes to have news regarding a new facility “by the end of 1Q 2022.”
